Call in for U.S. retirees: I know the Social Security Administration says to apply for benefits three months before you put one's feet up, but I'm curious about real-world experiences. If you're collecting SS, how much time elapsed between your application and the appearance of your first payment?
4 months. SS staggers the payments now. Your payment pass depends on your birth month. Mine is in Nov, so I get my check at the end of the month. They send payments every week now, in place of of once a month.

I'd recess until you are able to put your married name. You can not sign with your married name until after the wedding. If you sign with your maiden name, then you'll have to abscond another trip to change your name.
