I'm a European and a teensy-weensy bit confused: What's the fuss about the United States introducing Value Added Tax and abandoning stage sales tax? The Brits have it, we Krauts have it, the whole civilized world have it. What's your fear about it?

Can anybody discern why a value-added tax is regressive. I don't want the definition of a regressive tax, i know that it is a tax that badly effects poorer people, but why does a value-added tax dive under that category?
