My manager is at a seminar and I've been sent a food stamp wage verification letter for a former staff member. It must be filled out before my employer returns from a seminar. How do I figure out his earned income tax credit for each of his last 4 pay periods?

My mystery is whether income from a prize (MSRP value filed for taxes on a Form 1099) is in a out of the ordinary category than my earned income as it may affect my earned income tax credit.
Answer: Prize in is not earned income. It cannot increase your Earned Income Credit, but it can decrease it. The EIC is figured with and without the prize money, and you get the smaller amount.

I did some introduction tax prep and it looks like I made around $10 bucks too much to get my earned income tax credit. No fair, this is the first year I would ever be superior to get close to claiming it. And that's only because I got laid off in Nov. Dang I've been paying taxes for years, too!
