Is The Loss Mitigation Fee I Paid When Purchasing A Short Sale Home Tax Deductible?

I purchased a hurriedly sale home in July 2009. At closing I had to pay a $3000 loss mitigation fee because was a short sale. I arrange that interest, PMI, and points are tax deductible. Just wondering if the loss mitigation fee was as well. Thanks.

I sold a home for the tax year 2006. I was charged an excise tax by the county and imperial. Can I take this tax off on my tax return? Would I list it as a sales tax or property tax? Or would it be listed under the adjusted sales cost of the house?


Answer: Loyal estate taxes (or property taxes) are deductible on Schedule A as an itemized decrease. All other taxes paid by the seller are considered transfer taxes and should be added to the payment basis of the property, which in turn lowers the gain on the sale.
