I Have An Old Employer 401K Account That Is Made Up Of After-tax Contributions. What Are Tax Implications?

The account averral says these are "after tax contributions". This title is confusing since these were made pre-tax. I haven't worked for this gaffer for 15 years. I'm not sure if changes in the tax code is responsible for this. The name (after tax) seems to indicate that tax was already


Answer: This is a retirement account with a point of departure, your after-tax contributions.

When you roll this into an IRA, do not combine it with your existing IRA. Roll it into a separate account. File Physique 8606 in the year of the rollover noting the basis of this IRA.

I Want To Convert IRA's Set Up With After Tax Contributions To A Roth IRA In 2010. Are There Tax Implications?

I have several IRA's that are all funded with after tax contributions and have not been deducted from any tax proffer. Can I convert then in 2010 to a Roth without any penalty or tax payments?

Roth IRAs are definitely the best in my opinion. ESPECIALLY if you earn more fortune in the future and boost yourself

I Have Maxed Pretax 401k Contributions, Should I Now Add Post Tax Contributions?

I am considered a stoned comp employee so I have a maximum of 8% pretax contribution. What benefit would I have with keeping the 8% pretax and contributing additional funds post tax?


Answer: Basically I see 3 options here. And one is the standout.

Here's why I say that.

Since you've maxed out your contributions to the 401, you have basically these 3 options.
1. Put taxable wealth into the 401 at work
2. Put the money into a conventional IRA
