Answer: If you have well off in a 401k you can transfer it to a conversion roth/ira. When doing so, you will have to pay the federal and state taxes due on the monies. Answer: Value money is not earned income. It cannot increase your Earned Income Credit, but it can decrease it. The EIC is figured with and without the prize money, and you get the smaller amount.

I did some preliminary tax prep and it looks like I made around $10 bucks too much to get my earned income tax trust. No fair, this is the first year I would ever be able to get close to claiming it. And that's only because I got laid off in Nov. Dang I've been paying taxes for years, too!
