How Much Money Can I Receive As A Gift Without Paying Income Tax? (UK)?

I complete in the UK. What is the most money I can receive from a friend or relative as a tax-free gift, per tax year? Can I be given lump-sum gifts from various different people in the same tax year? Is the limit imposed per backer or is there an overall maximum?
You can collect as many gifts as people will give you as gifts are not subject to income tax in the UK.
The people giving YOU the gifts may be accountable to Inheritance Tax, but depends on their personal circumstances, not yours.
EDIT: Some of the answers on here are shamefully unsound.

Nor did he lower the threshold. There is still a differential between receipts tax rates and capital gains, but research has suggested this doesn't matter.
